I've done some research and read you can feed zebra's bread? Is this true. If so, what kind?

Here is a link to a recipe my vet printed off for me:
http://www.finchaviary.com/Maintenance/ ... readRecipe
I have to say that my birds LOVE this and go to eat it right away. My mom's zebras, however, turn their beaks up at it (and just about everything else). It lasts a really long time, too. I couldn't find the vitamins they list in the recipe, though.

I feed my birds (zebras included) whole grain/multi grain bread. I just hang half a slice per cage and they pick at it. My canaries love it. I only offer bread as a occasional treat; never daily. You could use any of the reputable brands found at your local grocery store.

That recipe at finchaviary is a really good one. It is very high in protein, with a dozen eggs per box of Jiffy mix. I used to make this all the time, but kind of fell out of the habit once I started making so much eggfood, but it is an easy way to get protein into your birds.

You're welcome! I hope that helps. My vet is having me feed it daily until my chicks are weaned, and then she says to feed it about three times a weak thereafter. She says that it's great for them.

I am going to try that this weekend... great recipe!
I take a slice of whole wheat bread and soak it in water for about ten seconds. Then I drain it and put whatever vitamin I am giving them at the time. They devour it!!!!

I think I might try that as a little treat Donna.

Just a quick question though

the only bread we carry in the house is the 14 grain, will this be fine

Lots of great ideas here...I will have to try giving my 12 grain to the birdies and see how it goes.

Be sure to soak it in water and make it really wet. They love it.
This is also a good thing to give them when traveling if you cannot take water or shipping..... gives them enough hydration.

I give mine 12 grain but never thought of soaking it! Thanks for the great tip! It will work better and won't dry out so fast.

I made the bird bread recipe yesterday. Then I put it into the food processor and grated it. My birds LOVED it. I think with the weather getting so warm I will start feeding this instead of the fresh eggfood so much since it spoils so easily.
I did make a few modifications. I added some dill, garlic and rosemary. It smelled so good cooking that everyone thought I was cooking something for them.

And we could eat that bread, too! Though it might be a little dense. But there is nothing in it, if you just use eggs and Jiffy mix, that would hurt you. Donna, I think that is a good idea to use this recipe instead of fresh eggfood in the hot weather, especially if the birds aren't raising chicks.
