Grass And Grass Seeds - Where and What to Buy?

Post by FLAMEonfire » Tue Aug 14, 2007 2:44 am

I have read about giving my finches grass seed and the grass itself. I have cut the Bahia grass {or field grass}into small pieces and put it on top of their food, which I had read somewhere is good for them to have, but I'm afraid to just buy the seed in a gardening store and give it to them - isn't the grass treated with something to help it grow? Wouldn't that be true with any seed that I would buy in a gardening store? But where else would I get it from and what other grasses to they eat?

Also I read that grass-finches - zebras, stars, gouldians, etc. live in pandanus palms in the wilds in Australia and that they eat the seeds during breeding season, {and molting season for the gouldians} I can't seem to find the correct seeds for that though. Has anyone else heard of this, and do you know where to buy the seeds from? The birds also use the leaves of the pandanus palm in the wilds for making nests! Anyone know where that can be brought? You hear or reads a lot of these things but no one ever telling you where you can get them from! It's like that with the chickweed I have no idea where to buy that either?! Now one of the Members here, says it grows wild in Texas, I'm that lucky in Florida! But it's got to come from somewhere. They must sell it? I just wish I knew where {LOL}

grass seed

Post by debbyloo » Tue Aug 14, 2007 8:20 am

I feed my finches the fresh green grass seeds stripped off the stalks of seeding grass from my lawn or another spot that I know is pesticide free. You surely have these in your lawn when the grass needs cutting or along the roadside before it is mowed. Any kind of seeding grass seems accepted, but my finches are spoiled and would rather eat the seed after I strip it off the stalks.

Chickweed is a very common, widespread lawn and garden weed that grows, here in Mississippi anyway, during cool weather (so spring for us). I bet if you ask someone in a plant nursery or farm co-op to point some out for you, they could readily do so.

Not sure about the palm leaves, but you could research on the web to find more information about it and possibly find it or a substitute for it. Florida has lots of palms, right? Palmetto for sure!

Hope this helps.

Link for Grass Seed from Ken

Post by FLAMEonfire » Tue Aug 14, 2007 9:57 am

Great Try Ken, and I really appreciate that you took the time to find that nursey for me. But they don't ship to the USA.

Now that I kind of know what to look for as far as finding a nursery, I should be able to find one here. But hugs and kisses for the effort!

You can find seeds for a lot of grasses at most nurseries, but maybe not at your big box stores. As Ken said, grasses from any meadow will work--if you keep a manicured lawn, you can always look for any neglected field, chances are it hasn't been sprayed for pesticides! I would stay away from grass growing close to the roadway, all kinds of emissions from our autos and trucks there. And if you are in the southern part of Florida, it may not get cool enough in winter for chickweed. I had it in Houston, where it doesn't get many hard freezes, but it does get cool in winter.

I sell finches and handmade cage seed skirts at area bird fairs -- one of the products I sell is bahia grass, which I have obtained from an area grower who does not use pesticides. If you are still looking for some, I would be happy to ship it for my actual UPS ground shipping cost. I usually sell it in one gallon ziploc bags as a mix with burlap, cotton batting, and coconut fiber, but I could send you a larger quantity of just the bahia. Let me know if you're interested.

I just signed up on this form, and don't know how to do the private posts; you can email me directly if you wish; my website is gammysseedskirts.com, however, it is still under construction, so my products are not listed there. Right now, I sell mostly at bird fairs in my area. I'll be happy to correspond with you by email at eitiher info@gammysseedskirts.com, or at seedskirts@bellsouth.net.
