Soy

Are finches able to digest soy? The reason I ask is that it occurred to me that I might use TVP (textured vegetable protein) as an addition to hard boiled egg. If you are not familiar with TVP, it is a meat substitute made from soy protein.
I have read that many people use various ingredients to "dry out" homemade egg food, and that high protein ingredients are preferred.
Any ideas as to whether this would work?

Soy seems to be one of those controversial topics. Seems it's being used in a lot of things but more and more anti soy articles have been popping up.
Here are a couple links about soy that I found:

Everything in moderation.

We discussed soy a while back...I'll see if I can find the post.

I used edamane for a protein source for my uromastyx, they loved it warmed. The had good body weight and their body color was brighter and healthier looking. Not sure what it would do for birds.

There has been debates over human use of the product like tofu and soy in regards to females and linking it to hormones and cancer. I discussed this with my doctor and he said it is fine, no real proof it is harmful.

this is the link to the topic

a section of the thread:
efinch an article on soy protein isolate in eggfood:

http://www.efinch.com/rblack_grayfinch.htms

this is a site that has a finch color food that contains a soy and a Finch Maintenance Mix that contains soy proteins, insects and other supplements

http://oregonfeederinsects.com/Aviarysup.html

I Googled "soy protein isolate for finches", there are many sites in regards to this. Suprisingly Zupreem fruit pellets contain it as does Kaytee hand feeding formula.

according to the information I found for Sally some of the pellets and handfeeding formulas contain it.

If already using a product containing soy I would be careful and adding more soy so as to not overdo it.

Wow! That is a lot of good reading. I'm so glad I asked. I don't know why, but it never occurred to me that estrogens would be an issue, even though I know of the research done in women and children, on fertility.
Thanks to both of you, Cindy and Debbie!
