I read somewhere, I believe it may have been online, that you can feed finches pumpkin. Is this true? If so, does it need to be cooked, or can it be raw?

Also, as food for thought, having a mother that works in the animal veterinary field, I know pumpkin is commonly subscribed to dogs with loose stools. Apparently, pumpkin helps firm things up. Does anyone know if this holds true for birds too? If so, it may be a nice, natural remedy for a bird that has loose poops.

My parrot years ago needed to be handfed longer than most you African Grays...I mixed organic puree pumpkin, wheat germ and hand feeding formula and he loved it warmed on it's own. The chances of the bird surviving depended on the feeding, medication and constant monitoring. My vet said due to the extra vitamins and benefit of the pumpkin and wheat germ I basically kept him strong.

Pumpkin is wonderful and can be added to birdie breads and birdie muffins..it is high in A. It is an excellent food.

I'm pretty sure all orange veggies are good for all birds. I would cook it or at least soften it a little. I suppose you could grate it like I do carrots though. I use my zester to grate the carrots so it's easier for the finches to eat. (I think they like the 'worm' shape. I really do)

If you don't want to fuss with the grating and cooking you can buy it in a can...Publix has an organic one. There are lots of different recipies for pumpkin bread and treats for birds on the internet. I have a few I use to use, I'll post them later.

I'll search through my files tomorrow for them then post them.

Another good food is sweet potatoes. Wash and scrub them well and microwave them, cool a bit then serve up with veggies. I leave my veggies out for only a couple of hours then toss.
