I had my cage outside for cleaning, when a little spider crawled though the bars, and within seconds, one of my finches had flown down and gobbled it up, there was a crunching sound and I could still see some of the spider sticking out of the finch's beak. Ew.

Should I be worried? Or does that mean my finch wants some luvefood?

i have no idea but i did wonder why there was never any spiders in my aviary

The ones that are toxic to humans are the ones that would concern me. When a spider bites it is a dirty bite/puncture...I would be concerned about infection if a bird is bitten....but it sounds like the birds are bug eating machines!!!!

It was just one of those common little black spiders, so I think it should be okay. Plus it definatly didn't get a chance to bite. Lol

A few weeks ago, I found a tiny brown treefrog in their cage (dunno how that got there) but luckily they didn't try to eat that.

It was probably just a little garden spider....just a wee snack!

My finches do the same thing when they are outside for cage cleaning. They have gone after flies, knats, mosquitos, and crawling bugs, if they can reach the bug. The only time I was worried was when there was a wasp hanging around the cage. I then used a broom to shoo the wasp away and finally had to take the finches inside because the wasp wanted something in their cage. Another time they were outside, a field mouse crawled on top of their cage and was just sitting. My GS cock was so upset. He kept making that warning cry and trying to peck at the mouse through the bars. Once I came up to the cage, the mouse fled. LOL.

i think in england were quite safe as the only toxic spider (i say toxic i mean can bite) is native to the canary islands so the canaries are safe
