egg food
Hi. I am new here and i have a question about egg food. My question is basically how often should you feed egg food to young birds that you plan on breeding in the future?
I have zebra finches 1 male grey, and 1 CFW female, and they love the egg food that I made for them, I just don't know how often to give it to them. Thanks

hi tina
once or twice a week preferably given on the same days in the week, but if your zebra finches have got young ,then every day and change it, if it goes sour during the day then more often as the adults eat it then feed it straight to the young...but giving it to your adult that are not breeding helps to build them up! but as i said no more than 3 times a week when they have no young

hi carmen
i give it 3 times a week as a rota,as the other days are given over to condition seed on the alternate days and soak seed sometimes added with the softfood.its just my preference as i think the birds would be bored getting the same stuff day in day out and it is a change from the ordinary seed .you dont have to do any of this of course it is up to the individual.as i have stated i give them eggfood all the time when they are breeding .....but with the winters we get i think they need some extra sustinance that the only reason i give the eggfood 3 times but obviously not in the same amounts !

You can serve the shell with the egg but I prefer to offer it separately, mixed with oyster shell.
The commercial eggfood is good if your birds will eat it. Mine are not so crazy about it unless I add some mashed up scrambled eggs to it. It helps to dry out the fresh eggs and adds vitamins.

Hi, Carmen - from what I've read, when the birds are just resting, not breeding or molting, they should be on more of an austerity diet. This doesn't mean leaving out veggies, etc., but cut way back on fattening foods. Egg food is very rich, so they don't need it all the time. I follow about the same schedule that Kenny listed, though not year-round.Carmen wrote:Ken, why not give them more often than three times a week?
Does it harm giving them every day eggfood?
I'm very curious for your answer
I also make an egg bread recipe I found on the internet. It basically takes just 1 box Jiffy cornbread mix and 12 eggs, you wind up with a lot of bread to put in freezer. My birds love it. You can also mix it with veggies, soak seed, etc. The original recipe calls for adding Kaytee handfeeding formula, but it was such a small amount, I don't even bother with that unless I feel like it. The bonus is that now you have 12 eggshells to crush and serve with oystershell grit! Here is where you can find this recipe:
www.finchaviary.com
From their home page, look under 'Care' then 'Diet' then eggfood recipes.
Sandy, I'm not sure what emp is. Most of these commercial eggfoods are good, I just find them kind of expensive, so making my own saves money (so I can buy more birds

hi emily
you could try some bread crumbs with it,put a slice of bread in the oven so that it goes really hard then just grind it up and mix it with your eggfood you can always add a tiny amount of water if you think its to dry,if you have any brewers yeast tablets you can grind one up and mix that in aswell it will give them something different to go at
