I just read Candace's post with her recipe for making a calcium/mineral supplement. Wow! I only have 6 birds & just recently bought a 16 oz. bag ($1.49) of Higgins Snack Attack Mineral Grit Oyster Shell & Mineral Treat. Higgins is manufactured in Florida. Contents are Crushed Oyster Shell, Calcium Oxide, Calcium Carbonate, Magnesium Oxide, Iron Oxide, Silica, Sodium, Potassium Iodide, Copper Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Nickel Sulfate Ferrous Sulfate, Magnesium Sulfate, Natural Anise Flavor. Let me tell you, with that Anise flavor you can sure smell the Anise in the room; I kind of like it. Although the list of ingredients sounds kinda scairy, it says it is free of artifical preservatives. And it's a pretty green color!
Anybody out there familiar with Higgins products?

I offer it alone and ground to a powder (Coffee grinder) in a dish combined with finely grated cuttle bone and mineral block.

I add a bit to my powdered mix...less waste, some of my birds take the sliver when it is whole and travel with it, nibble a bite and the rest drops to through the grate into the tray.
