hi

i have been reading a lot of forum members posts saying that they feed their finches freeze dried bloodworms.

where do you get these? i have seen them at the petstore in the fish food section, is this the correct type, or is there a better kind for birds?

I discovered that I am really allergic to them, and break out into a sneezing fit with runny nose, itchy throat and tounge, and water eyes, and coughing. I dont even have to touch the stuff to have this problem. Just have to be near it. I cant believe I just used it again, and Im and having these symptoms and dont have any allergy pills left in the house
I just read the side label and in fine print is says "may cause allergic reaction" *sigh* its now in the garbage.

I wonder if there is anything else I can try. Do they even need this? or any type of insect/live/dried food. Or are they ok with just plain egg food?

I use the kind for fish. My RCCBs really enjoy them. The societies don't mind them either!

I got mine from Petsmart.
The Fire Finches really like them. After I gave them the freeze dried bloodworms, they started laying eggs for me. I put a few drops of water onto the worms, so it softens the worms. They are the only ones that get the worms.

I use the Hikari brand freeze-dried bloodworms, the ones sold in the fish department of pet shops. They are very lightweight and will blow around the cage, so I add mine to the eggfood. The reason for feeding bloodworms is that they have a high protein content, which breeding birds need for their young to grow quickly. Homemade eggfood also has a high protein content.

I just love the tips I get from this forum! I mixed my freeze dried bloodworms in with the eggfood this morning! Much better system.

I don't know about your green singers, but the gouldians don't need live food as far as I know. Mine never touch mealworms, but they do like crumbled hardboiled egg.

Ursula- thank you. I wont be using this again, or any live,dried, or freeze dried food for the fear I will have a reaction again.

Last night and this morning have been such torture! My allergies are so crazy right now, my throat and tounge and inside of my ears is so itchy and feels like its closing a bit. I cant stop sneezing, eyes are so watery, and my nose is running.
I had NO idea how allergic I am to those bloodworms!!
Thank god its morning, Im about to head out to get some allergy medication.

Just wanted to put it out there, as a warning that there is an allergy allert on these things. So just use with caution.
