How do you get your finches to try mealworms?? I offered some to my green singers the other day, and they wont touch it. How do you get them to try this when its obviously their first time?

Are you trying to breed them and that's why you are giving mealworms? Mix them with something they do like in a tray or dish on the floor of the cage/flight. Like with egg food, greens, etc.
It may just take time.

I would just keep giving them a few.....If they have never seen them it may take time.....Once they figure it out you will need to stock up....my waxbills and RH Parrots love them....especially when raising young.

Thanks. I will continue to offer a few, maybe they will take it.
Can you recommend some food that works best to offer it in? (seed, egg food, alone in a dish, veggies)

When I started giving mealworms only the waxbills and Zebras ate it. After a while the society finches and lemon breasted canaries wondered the fuzz was all about and started eating it. My silverbills are the only birds in the aviary that does not eat it.

What size mealworms did you try? My finches only eat the mini mealworms. Only my button quail like the big ones.

I just put them on top of the fresh eggfood and pellets I give my birds in the morning....If they last at all, all my birds dive in now, the mealworms get to eat good food BEFORE they are eaten! LOL

The mini mealworms. The big one are no good for waxbills. When my mini mealworms are big, I put them in boiling water and cut them in half. It you cut them raw, the innards run out.

I would love it if all my birds didn't want live food! Count yourself lucky, it is a lot easier and cheaper to supply eggfood than mealworms, and in my opinion, the eggfood is a lot better for them.
