You can get 5lbs of powdered oyster shells from Bird Supply NH. I shave cuttlebone and mineral block. You can try a coffee grinder but do it outside, when you open the top is us like a smokey dust when you first open the lid.

I have no problem shaving cuttlebone - just use a butterknife and scrape it downwards on an angle into a bowl. It goes very quickly!

Is there a benefit to shaved vs. just attaching it to the cage?

I just like to put some in their mineral mix since of the birds don't seem to use the hanging cuttlebone.
Thanks for the link Debbie. I CAN shave it off, but it is something I just hate doing for some reason....

I tried the coffee grinder with egg shells, and had the same situation.
A plume of egg shell dust just came out of the coffee grinder when I opened it. yuk. That find dust spreads and settles on everything.

They don't like the hanging cuttlebone? I guess I'm lucky then, cause mine love it! Even the babies have taken to it very well!

Maybe a silly question...:
Is cuttle bone something finches should be eating on a regular basis, or only when they feel they need it ie. during breeding season?
Mine only ever touched it during breeding season, and now just use it to perch on
In this case, should I be shaving it to make it more accessible/easier to eat, or should I let them decide when to eat it?

Mine use it all the time. The powdered is good to!
How about a fine hole cheese grater works great....it grates it finer almost like powdered sugar!

They have powdered cuttlebone at Petco. It's in a spice-type of container.
I grind mine down and use it to help dry out eggfood.
