eggfood with soy flour?

Post by mdshirajum » Thu Aug 23, 2012 11:33 pm

I just made an eggfood but modified the recipe by discarding corn meal and putting in soy flour. now thinking whether soy flour is good for birds! the food looks and smells delicious though... :)

I bought soy bean and made flour in a food processor. should I feed this to my zebra and gouldians?

Check the protein content of the soy flour. I was advised at one time to use soy protein isolate from the health food store to raise the protein level in my handfeeding formula, but you have to be careful that you don't raise it too much.

@sally: the protein seems to be from min 20% to max 36% :?: .
@LittleWings: Yah.. I knew that :) .

I took 6 eggs, their microwaved shell powder, about 1.5 cup of soy flour (made the flour from raw soybeans) and 1 tsp cod liver oil. Mixed everything and baked at 400C for about 30 mins. Got a nice smelling very dry cake :D . Then grated the cake and and it's in the freezer now. will feed the birds tomorrow.

Just wondering if there is anything bad about it... #-o

It will be interesting to see how they do with it. I have some species that need a very high protein content when raising babies, since they are very insectivorous. I have used various soy products to try to raise the protein for them. Since you have Zebras and Gouldians, you may not need to raise the protein level that much.

Oh good! Had my fingers crossed that you didn't already feed it [-o<

As far as anything bad about it, that seems to be a matter of opinion. Personally soy is not something I would feed to my birds. Their seem to be a lot of controversy over whether or not its any good for you :?:
I think Quinoa would be a better option...

I don't think that there would be any problems, my dry egg biscuit contains soy so it should be fine. You could always change the soy to different products to se what they like the best. In my egg food mix I use breadcrumbs and sunflower powder as a binder these seem fine and now I'm trying a semolina one next. The only concern which I would have with high proteins with the zebs and gouldians is to much can make males a bit more aggressive.
