Hello Avis, this is a subject that you can't get a real answer as to how many are needed but depending on what types of finches you have I can sort of give you a starting point on to base your feedings. Some finches require a supply that won't run out while others can be a good amount once a day while some may just require a few a day. If you let us know which types of finches you are feeding and how many you can get a starting point.

Avis with the selection of birds you have all will eat live food but jot all will require it. Cordons will need a constant supply and you don't want to run out or you'll find dead chicks. Ruddies, stars, cut throats, Orange breasts and BFPF don't actually need live food but they will love it and your clutches maybe stronger for it. My advice is to give these second lot of birds a good amount around maybe 10 worms per pair, if you supply greens and greens seeding grasses these second lot will devour that before the live food in most cases. If your able too try and find a supplier of maggots these work just as great if not better than mealies.
