So I have been experiementing with this, and have had succes. But wanted your opinions if it is safe.

I boil the eggs obviously, and shake them up with some cornmeal. I then lay it out on a plate, (not piled but spread out) and it dries in a few hours and looks just like my uncles bulk bin of dried eggfood. Now is it safe for the birds to eat this?? It does not smell bad, or look discolored, and I have eaten a spoonful (the thigs we do for our birds) and have not gotten sick.. Opinions please!

Ps it is dried on my windowsill in the sun.

I'd be afraid the egg would have bacteria from sitting in the heat of the sun on your window. We may be fine, but the finches could get sick. I dry out my hard boil eggs by cracking each one with a paper towel, which absorbs extra water, and then add some handfeeding formula in the food processor and pulse a few times, to get crumbles, not paste.

So Deborah, do you think if I shook it up with formula and baked it for a few minutes instead of sun drying it, it would be safe?

Why do you want to bake it? Are you making an eggfood bread?

No, bake to dry it out completely so it can be stored.

I found a recipe for powdered eggs. And by following the instrcutions, instead of scrambling eggs I would bake them, the next step it to chop it up into tiny pieces and bake at 135 to dry it, then you put it through a blender to powder it, bt instead of putting it through the blender I would leave it as dried crumbles and I can store it in a dry place and never have to make fresh eggfood

Sounds like more work then cracking open a hard boiled egg and putting it on a dish to me.

I use Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix - just add 6 eggs stir wll then add anything your birds
would like ie: seeds, grated veggies, crushed egg shell.... I bake at 400 for 25 min. in a cake pan. Let it cool then I grind it up in a food processer.
My birds love it.

I also add Feather Fast to the finished product.

Debbie, how do you store any extra?

I have tried hard boiled eggs cut up but they don't seem to like it as much as this egg mix. I usually end up throwing the hard boiled eggs away cause they don't eat them all. My birds all but lick the plate of the egg bread.....

I want to make something like egg crumbles with no fridge neccesary. And maybe even dry out little carrot slices to keep in the mix and add powdered cuttlebone.

Even though its baked I still store in an airtight container in the fridge. It last about a week +/-. Its so easy in the mornings to feed the birds. Just takes a few minutes.....

Ok, hmm sounds good. I will try it out. I will also try to bake the eggs to see if I get dried crumbles

I've tried the egg breads and othe recipes, but my finches want the hardboiled eggfood. They eat that first and seed second when I feed in the am. I may try again if someone has lots of success.
