Ok I have heard so much good lately about this pre bought dry egg food I have decided to give it a try as opposed to making my own,

My question is how long can the dry safely stay in the feed cup before needing dumped???

I just leave a small dish with commercial dry food at all times in my breeder cages. They eventually eat pretty much all of it, or if they start pooping in it, then I have to dump that. If their bath is near the egg food dish, and the dry egg food got wet from the birds throwing water around, then I would watch it. With non-breeders, they get a dish of homemade eggfood once a week, so I don't bother with the commercial mix for them.

Oh So it doesnt need changed every few days GREAT, what a time saver, lol

I actually put commercial eggfood in a seed hopper and put the seed hopper on the cage when there are chicks in the nest.

If I'm not feeding my home made egg food I'll use some Kaytee Fledgling food that my finches love.

Every day when I clean their cages I put a special treat cup at the bottom of the cage with Twin Beaks Herb Salad, some dry egg food, and sometimes a special seed treat.

I only put a pinch of each in the cup and change it every day. Usually there is nothing left, which is nice.

TammyS...thanks for mentioning about putting the commercial eggfood in the seed hoppers....I was thinking of doing that but hadn't yet because I figured they would plug up...but if it works for you...then I will try it too!

Try sprinkling something enticing on top of the dry eggfood to get them to try it...some millet or other favorite treat! You have to be sneaky about getting them to try new foods sometimes...

Another option is a teacher bird - canaries try everything!

That is new to me...Canary's being teacher birds! I would love to get a Canary someday....but first a bigger cage...sigh!

Yes - canaries are great teacher birds. They seem to be willing to try just about anything. I put them in a flight and in a few weeks they had everyone eating corn, broccoli, zucchini, carrots, fresh greens...to name a few.

And the added benefit is their lovely singing..

Those Canary's are quite amazing.

I don't suppose if I paint my hand yellow like a Canary and start pecking at the foods my Finches would get the idea?
