I was just wondering if it's okay to give my Society Finches mashed up hard boiled egg/crushed eggshell every day. I don't add anything to it, it's just hard boiled egg in the shell mashed up really good with a fork. They get it once a day and I only keep it in the cage for a couple hours.

Also should I keep spray millet for just a treat or can I keep it hung in the cage all the time?

My birds munch on everything including their regular seed which (according to the bag) is fortified with the good stuff my Finchy friends need.

My birds are provided with millet nearly every day in addition to their seed. I may give a day's spacing between millet sprigs at times.

I generally will only give my birds boiled egg with the shell once a week unless I am trying to get them to breed or they are rearing chicks. It shouldn't hurt to give it to them every day though, even if they aren't.

They really enjoy their boiled egg which is why I give it to them every day because it is really the only "treat" they get and they don't seem to go near the cuttlebone on the side of their cage.

As for the millet sprig I leave it in the cage until they pick it clean and then I let them play with it for a few days before replacing it.

Yes I agree hard-boiled eggs w/shell everyday it is very good for them, the shells helps them have lots of calcium, that is wonderful you can take it out in 2 hours so it doesn't spoil.

My Finches have Millet Spray all the time also.

They also like apples, leaf lettuce, grated carrots, frozen peas and corn or fresh if you have them that is just a few vegs. I use in my soft food. It may take them a while to get use to new food, just keep trying it.

Once I go home (where I can walk to the grocery store) I'm going to get them some fresh veggies. The lady where I bought the birds used to give them collard greens so I know they USED to eat veggies.

Right now I'm at my trailer where I spend the summer. I bought the birds near here but we're finally going home sunday.

Collards are very good for the birds, as is kale. My birds love broccoli, too, I chop it up very small in the food processor. The only thing about feeding eggfood every day is that some birds will be stimulated into breeding mode by the extra protein.

Is that bad though? I kinda want them to breed. I think they'll make nice babies. I'm not saying I want to continuously breed them like a puppy mill, I just want to see what the babies are going to look like, especially if Paddock and Miller shack up.

Edit: HEY! Is that bagged salad you can buy from the grocery store okay for my finches? I figured I'd wander the produce aisle with my phone in hand picking up random veggies (that people recommend on here, hence phone in hand lol) and then a bag of salad just for good measure.

Millet can be an issue with budgerigars, as they can get fat. It doesn't seem to be an issue with canaries or finches (that I have observed) as they are so active! My finches like playing with, and pulling bits off the millet. My canary will decimate it, when provided, in round about 1/2 hour

Wow! Half an hour? My four finches haven't even put a dent in theirs and its been there since saturday.

Breeding is fine if you want them to. However, your birds should be at least a year old before being bred and should have no more than 3 clutches per year. Obviously they should be in good health, mated with the same species and free of known defects.

I don't know if I would use salad mix for my birds, certainly not often. The salad mix, since things are already sliced or chopped may be harder to wash thoroughly. Lettuce also has a tendency to cause diarrhea, so I wouldn't feed it often. Also, if you do go the salad mix route, I'd check out the ingredients and make sure no preservatives or other additives have been added to the mix.

This is great, I love learning new things about my birds! I'm glad I can give them more than just seed and water. Thanks for all the info!
