Eat your veggies

Post by PrettyBird » Sat Oct 20, 2012 2:44 pm

I give my birds, lots of veg and some fruit.
I sometimes do spinach, apple, dark leaf lettuc or bok choi.

Today I gave them some chopped kale, broccoli, carrots and red peppers.

This was mostly for my parrotlet, Bee Bee, so the chunks are a little bigger than I would normally chop for finches.

But heres a picture of their 3 dishes to give you an idea :) (finches dishes are the two on the left. Bee Bee's is the one on the right with more stuff in it) With hers I mix in crushed pellets till its a nice consistancy (I didnt take a picture of that, so this is the before shot lol). She wont eat pellets unless I have blended them to a powder in a food processor. I thought this was a good way to get her to eat them

I was wondering what was the best way to present veggies to finches. With the parakeets, I just put in whole romaine lettuce leaves, and slices of other things, and let them pick them apart on their own. Broccoli gets clipped in clumps to the bars near perches. With 16 parakeets in one cage, it's kinda like watching a school of feathered piranhas attacking--entire flock just attacks, picks, tosses, pulls--and sometimes in mere minutes it's gone.

But what about the finches? Have tried some chopped, some big pieces to pick at, they seem interested, but not sure that a whole lot is actually getting into the birds, either way. Is it better to chop to tiny, seed-sized pieces? or put in chunks for them to pick at? Or clip it to the side of the cage so they can pick and pull at it?

If I have leafy greens like lettuce, bok choi, spinach etc. I dont usually chop it up. I just pull large junks and put it in a dish. I find they like to pull apart pieces themselves.

With things like carrots, or apple. I dont chop fine pieces, I usually shred them with a cheese grater.
My finches like to eat it that way.

Its been a whole bunch of trial and error to finally figure out how they like to eat it
