I feed my sun conure Harrison pellet food, and I thought I might try it for my new zebra finches, they seem to really like it! But I was wondering if anyone has tried it for their finches and what they thought of it

My zebras are fed Roudybush nibbles, used to feed Zupreem Natural, until they stopped making them in XS size.
I like it, because I don't have seed hulls flying all over the place. And with seeds, I used to throw out half the seeds cuz they don't like it. With pellets, they eat it all, well not so much the powdered pellets.

Gary, they changed the size back...PetSmart had them here and a vendor at the show told me they went back to the original xsmall size. I bought some at PetSmart and the birds loved it....wish they never tried to change it, it was working well before with my birds. Roudybush nibbles and zupreem fruit blends are their favorites.

Thanks Cindy
The Zupreem natural in size S was too big for the finches, they ignored it. I just got a 20 pound sack of Roudybush to work down before I go back to Zupreem natural. That is IF I can find it in the 10 or 20 pound sack.

Curious, are the pellets powdered or are the birds making them powder because they are trying to hull the funny looking seeds? :D

I think when the birds are breaking the pellets in their beak exactly as you indicate, like seeds. The Roudybush nibbles is probably too big to swallow anyway. I think when they are cracking the pellets, some spills out of their beak, and that is the powder that is left in the feed tray, just like seed hulls. All of my birds (zebras, societies and gouldians) seem to do that to some degree. Some leave more powder than others. Most will eat the powder after they finish off the larger pellets, but a few will not.

The gouldians get LaFeber's finch food, which is much smaller pellets, and probably small enough to swallow. Even then I see powdered pellets. So even with the small stuff they are "cracking" it.

I read an article once that the birds that are fed pellets try to hull it which creates powder that usually goes to waste. Being seed eaters I'm sure it's burned into their make-up to hull their food so it would be very natural for them. So I guess a certain amount of powdered pellets would be expected.
