60x40x40 if my calculations are correct is about a 23 1/2 x 15 3/4 x 15 3/4 inch cage. That's doesn't sound like a large enough cage for multiple birds and still give them room to exercise and work off any excess fat. Is there any way to give him a bigger area to exercise?

I agree with Debbie, you need a larger cage. A seed diet alone is not sufficient nutrition, you can try adding pellets, veggies like romaine, shaved broccoli, shredded carrots, a slice of peeled apple, cucumber, soaked and sprouted seed or quinoa.....here is the nutrition section on the finch info center... lots of good ideas. Some seed can be fatty like sunflower bits.

Once you can move them to a larger cage, they can get enough exercise to work off the fat. If they don't they can have fatty liver disease and die earlier than normal.

Could he be eating out of boredom? My finches get sad and inactive if they are in a cage alone. I have society finches and they all get along very well but have to share their food.

I agree with beachbird. When I was new to finching and had my finches in a too small cage with no diversion (no plants, no hay to play with), they ate a LOT more, because they simply had nothing else to do all day. So, based on my experience, this could be part of the issue.beachbird wrote: Could he be eating out of boredom? My finches get sad and inactive if they are in a cage alone.
