Hey guys,
I have a zebra finch, and my moms friend grows live cat grass for her cats, is catgrass safe for a zebra finch to eat,
If not does anyone have any suggestions of some safe greenery I can put in his cage?
Thank you

I've not tried it, but grow little pots of wheat and other grasses and greens and the birds love them all! I have seen no information to say that cat grass would be harmful in any way.

Also want to say - Welcome to the Forum! Don't forget to check out the Finch Information Center to your left. There's a lot of great information there.
We love bird photos, so if you have any to share, they would be much appreciated.
Welcome!

I just use an organic potting soil with no additives. This has worked well for many years. They actually enjoy digging around in the dirt after the grass is gone so you don't want added chemicals or fertilizers, etc.

I've also grown all different types of grass for the birds. They also love it when I grow their seed mix for them.

Is this Catnip? That is apparently toxic to birds.
There are other types of live "Pet Grass" that pet stores carry - I have some Wheat Grass in with the birds. They will eat it, and break some off for nesting.
You can also buy some at a Whole Foods, or similar type market.
Just to be safe, I would stay away from anything called "Cat Grass".

Cat grass is usually wheat or oat or barley sprouted for cats and referred to as cat grass. As others have said you can grow any type of grasses or finch seeds.
Catnip isn't a grass at all and is toxic so hopefully that isn't what your mom's friend has.

Charlie is spot on! "Cat Grass" looks perfectly safe.
I had never heard of that term.
"Cat Nip" refers to plants of Nepeta genus, and is toxic to birds. Looks nothing like grass.
My bad.

I have various pots going with different seeds or grasses growing in them. The birds love it! Just make sure the soil is clean (organic) and no pesticides have been near it and then you are good to go
