Herb Salad at last!

Post by Acelin_Wolf » Wed Jul 24, 2013 10:14 pm

I finally got around to purchasing herb salad for my finches, from the LadyGouldian site.

It's been less than 5 minutes and the societies are already eating it lol. XD Well worth the buy!

EDIT: As I typed this, the OCWBs and the spice finch have joined in! Haha.

That is so cool! Really wish we had something like that my side of the world to purchase. Otherwise I need to do some homework and make up my own herb mix. Hmmm....

Edited to say that I see they ship globally. Need to hide my credit card!!! :|

So funny! I just got a bucket of these yesterday!
Everyone is picking out what they want, and using the larger pieces to decorate nests with.

Lots of good stuff in there, smells great too!

I bought some as well, and mine picked at it a bit but then ignored it in favor of the fresh greens. They occasionally go and poke in the cup of it, but it doesn't seem the dry stuff attracts their attention much.

Mine also picked at it at first but then mostly ignored it when I offered it. I was told by Laraine not to mix it in the egg food so that they can pick and choose which herb they need enabling your bird to self-medicate. :?

How do I feed Herb Salad to my birds?
The fundamental principal behind Herb Salad, and what it affords your bird over food and water additives, is in the way it gives your bird the power to choose. This is best accomplished by feeding Herb Salad in its own container. Desirable, are shallow dishes that allow easy access to the entire supply, rather than just surface contents. A shallower container will also help eliminate waste brought on by digging birds searching for individual herbs. To help acclimate the fussy eater, Herb Salad may be added to their seed. We do not recommend adding it to soft or cooked diets.

When I was desperate to "cure" my gouldian from twirling last year, I tried all kinds of medicines with no change. The only thing that seemed to help was when I offered a separate cup of herb salad TEA. He chose to drink that over the regular water and was not flipping on to the ground as much. Dunno what in it helped him...?

My birds must feel they need lots of self medicating lol. They're eating it all immediately each time I give it to them lol.

My birds love it too, and yes, use the larger pieces for their nest. I didn't think about making it into a tea. That's a great idea for my sick little girl right now!
