Crumbling Birdir Bread/Whole Pieces?
Since some of my bird will not eat birdie bread from the shape of the squares i cut them in, is it OK to crumble it up? I have made mine into crumbles and still have it in the freezer.. Will the birds still eat it?

Keep trying - I even lightly toast some - they seem to like that better. Once one starts, they will usually all join in.
FYI, I put a light spread of coconut oil on the bread last time. Still no takers! Will keep trying. It's so good for them - but doesn't do any good at all if they won't eat it!

Don't know how the rest of you make your egg food but I run my cornbread mixture through the mini chopper (or processor). This is a small unit for chopping up small amounts of veggies and it absolutely crumbles the birdie bread. All Gone Pronto!

Forgive me if this is a stupid question
but do you bake the cornbread first? Or just use the mixture from the box? What brand?

I normally offer hardboiled eggs mixed with chopped veggies, and birdie bread seperatly. I mashed my birdie bread, mixed it with my laready frozed eggs and veggies, and some fresh eggs last night. They seem to like it!!carlamay wrote: Don't know how the rest of you make your egg food but I run my cornbread mixture through the mini chopper (or processor). Re: Crumbling Birdir Bread/Whole Pieces?
Sunbay So sorry that I have been away for a day or two....here is what I do. I dump plain yellow cornmeal into a bowl, add just a tad of baking powder and salt, break 4-5 eggs including shells and add water for any additional moisture needed. But keep it on the dry side. Pour into long baking dish, sprayed with olive oil, so that it is rather thin and bake at 400 for about 30 minutes. then take it out, break it up and let it dry out as the oven cools. Sometimes I even bake it the night before so that it is really dry for the recipe.
While it is cooking I will have boiled 4 or so eggs which I will put into the chopper with my slightly defrosted peas, carrots, corn, broccoli (whatever is in the freezer) as well as fresh bell peppers and fresh cilantro - they love that smell! I add calcium, kelp, spirulina, and birdie vitamins. I run the chopper with that and come out with a wet concoction which I put into a bowl.
Then I run the cornbread through the chopper to pulverize it and return it to the baking dish. I put a layer of cornbread into the chopper, several dollops of the wet boiled egg mix, and more cornbread - judged by the size of your "whopper chopper". Run the chopper until it is blended - I have to have the mix on the dry side for the gouldians.
Some goes into a tupperware type container and into the fridge for immediate needs - generally enought for 3 days- and the rest into giant zip locks and into the freezer.
My birds LOVE this and it does vary a bit by batch. I sometimes put in steel cut oats - just whatever you feel is healthy.
Good Luck!

DanteD716 - I have used the Jiffy mix and had good luck with it but I don't put my vitamins or such in it until after it is baked. I wonder if there aren't nutrients lost in the heat of the oven.
