Seashell Grit?

Post by saragoescrazy » Fri Oct 13, 2006 5:31 am

Today I found some what I believe is sea shells broken up, like seashell grit or something in the shops today. I've heard crushed up oyster shell is a good souce of calcium for finches and everything, but some of the peices look a little bit large for the little finch beaks to eat... is it okay for them to eat? It's Trill brand...

Thanks in advance! :-)

They will break up the pieces that are too big. There is some debate on whether finches require grit as they hull their seeds. BUT the oyster shell is a definite bonus to their diet. If it were me I would offer it to them only in small amounts and on occasion rather than daily. I've heard they can overeat it otherwise.

just make sure that if you are breeding any birds do not fill the grit pot up whilst the adults are feeding youngsters as they have atendancy to shove anything new placed in the cage down the throats of the youngsters
