I received a free sample of Organic chick starter at the farm co-op yesterday. 19% protein. I wondered if I could add it to my Gouldians mashed eggs:
the contents are:
Organic corn, Organic soy, Organic oats, Organic Barley, Organic wheat midds, organic soy oil, DL-Mthionine, iron oxide, calcium carbonate, salt, monocalcium/Dialcium phosphate, ferrous sulfate, manganeous oxide, zinc oxide, copper sulfate, ethylenediamine dihydriodide, sodium selenite, folic acid, vitamin d3 supplement, viatamin a supplement, choline chloride, niacin, vitamin e supplement, vitamin b12 supplement, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin, pyridoxine hydrocholoride, thiamine menadion dimethylprimidinol bisulfite, zinc methionine complex.

In days before commercial egg food etc some old books mention using chicken starter. Not sure if the balance of maize based food is good for finches but it wouldn't kill them I guess.

As long as it does not say medicated on it, that is what I was told and use the kind for adults only. I do not know about the chick starter.

Chick starter usually has higher protein levels than laying pellets. So it might be ok during the breeding season. I certainly don't think mixing it into their soft food is going to hurt anything. I agree completely with Cindy regarding the medicated feed though. I would not give that to finches. They don't even recommend that it be fed to gamebirds.
