spray millet?

Post by sgolds » Sat May 10, 2014 6:44 pm

They sure do seem to love the stuff! Is it ok for them to have it always, or should it just be given as an occasional treat?

I find too that when it's there all the time, it becomes just one choice of many, and they don't gorge on it the way they do when it's an occasional treat. I usually hang it from the top of the cage, so they can hang on it and forage at the finchy "drive through."

I also give it daily and they just love it.

I've also started sprouting the millet seeds to give them some extra nutrients. They love it! A small tea ball, with one of the halves filled with seed makes enough for 2 days for 5 birds and a chick.

It also gives them something to do when they're in breeding/nest building mode. Once most of the seeds are gone, it goes from a food item to nesting material. I have one little guy who will use all his finchey brain power and braun in an attempt to get the sprig loose from the little plastic clip that secures it to the cage side.
I've seen him spend well over an hour trying to get it loose. He always gets it! And once he does, he proudly prances around with the sprig in his mouth for a few minutes before he puts it in his nest. It looks like he's clearly savoring his success! LOL

-newb alert-

I give mine spray millet daily. A sprig will take them 2 days to pick clean. I had bought a hanger/holder for the millet but it seemed like they couldn't really fit their beaks inside to clean it up. Do you think a binder clip to the top of the cage will hang it successfully? Or does anyone have any other crafty ideas on how to place it to keep the finches entertained?

My guys love spray millet and eat it daily. I know they enjoy it and I think it's good for them, along with a good diet of mixed seeds, vegetables, fruits, eggs, meal worms and other things.

I hang it from top of cages and they fly up to it and grab on and eat it that way. They love the stuff. Need to find me a feed mill that sells it wholesale. Btw I use those clips for the potato chip bags to hang it and it seems to work very well.

If I put spray millet in the cage daily, they will eat only that till it's gone! So I don't put it in there every day. When I was trying to get my picky goulds to eat fresh boiled eggs mixed with other goodies, they wouldn't touch it!!! So I cut back on the millet spray. But when I added boiled egg to the cage, I crumbled some millet seed into the egg mix and stirred it up so they would have to dig through the egg (and get a taste of egg) to get to the few millet seed in the cup. Guess what! They started eating mashed boiled egg!!! So the millet spray has come in handy...kind of like "candy rewards" when my kids were young!

I agree with Jen. Whenever I out spray millet in the cage, they ignore the seed in trays until most of the spray is picked clean. They even ignore most of the soft food. I only put in a spray once a week per pair a few days before I change out the newspaper and/or do a throroigh sweeping of the room. It's messy.

I only change out the newspaper once a week although I out newspaper on top of the grates under the perches and those get changed at least 2x a week, maybe more depending on how much poop there is.
