Fruit and Veg

Post by Gráinne Barrett » Wed Aug 27, 2014 9:09 am

Hello everybody,
I currently feed my finches, canaries and diamond doves apples and broccoli from the fruit & veg aspect of things. What other fruit and veg do they like? Note in mind I'm from Ireland so no fancy stuff!!! :P

Mine also like broccoli, but they aren't big on fruit. Kale is very good for them, really any of the dark leafy greens. Romaine lettuce, which you may know as cos lettuce. Mine love cucumber, even though it isn't supposed to have a lot of nutritional value to it.

sally said most of it. My birds love kale. And romaine too. They can also have many other fruits and vegetables . MiaCarter showed us a chart of many foods they can and cannot eat. Hopefully she can supply us with this. :)

Gráinne Barrett
Hi.
My guys eat enough fruit and vegetables that I'm begining to wonder if they are not tiny feathered goats.
Apples, chopped grapes, mandarins, blue berries, banana, melons, corn which I cut off the cob, romaine, spinach, kale, beet greens, brocc, rappini, red chard, baby spring greens, sweet peppers, carrot greens, grated carrots, love cucumber, cooked peas. They eat it all.
They also love grated hard boiled eggs, crushed freeze dried meal worms, fortified bird grit, cuttle bone, mineral block, and of course spray millet (universal favorite). And that's all along with their finch/canary seed mix.
It's amazing how much such tiny creatures can eat.

Hi lovezebs, how do you get your guys to eat like that?

I have java finches what won't eat any fruit or vegie I gave them so far (including berries, strawberries, apples, lettuce, broccoli, kale). My java finches are just like my kids when they were toddlers and would spit out any vegies I fed them.

I just want to add sprouts to the list (lentils, mung beans etc). All of my birds love these!

Mine love to eat just about any veg safe for them and cut down to size. My standard blender mix: is carrot, cabbage, broccoli, spinach & cauliflower. Then any seasonal veg that is in my fridge . Usually I add corn and peas to the mix (type that are frozen and store bought).
Looks something like this:
Vegetable salad with peas carrots corn cabbage broc.jpg

Fruit wise mine are more picky. They like some the soft fruit like mango, pawpaw and pear or apple, but generally love tucking into oranges. Serve it as halves or in wedges and they sit popping the juice sacks :D
As Rox mentioned mine love sprouts too.

I told you :-) , very rare, tiny, feathered goats. LOL. I had never thought birds would eat like that. It's amazing. I wash stuff of course, then hang some up in the flights. The rest gets thrown on the chopping board and chopped, not all that small either, like you would for a salad. Plop it on their tray and they dig in like starving cannibals. I alternate different things on different days.
Carrot greens get hung up from top if flight and then they do the Tarzan swing. Awesome to watch. Mandarines get halved, as mentioned above.
I would first try large romaine lettuce leaves with finicky eaters. Wash and hang in cage, close to favorite perch. Next I would try cucumbers, sliced into two inch wedges and poked between the bars close to where they sit.
Try a little bit of different things, until they try something and then intriduce something else. If one tries it, the rest will follow.

Good luck.

I have canaries, societies, Javas, a Gouldian, and silverbills and they all eat any vegetable I provide. I put out lettuce and broccoli every day and apple, grapes, oranges, melon, kale, carrots, sweet potato, and sweet corn (the unchallenged, universal favorite) a few times a week. Everyone loves their greens, the canaries looooove their fruit. The Javas also will nibble apple, but the finches don't care for it.
