I'm too afraid of ending up with fruit flies all over the house if i started feeding them to birds, same with crickets

Hi Karen, and thanks for video.
That's exactly the way I did it the second time around . Fruitflies everywhere. Birds watching them with a sort of fascinated horror
, as they run all over the flight floor, up the bars, up my arms, dropping to the floor crawling up the walls.
My next attempt today, was to shake them into a ziplock bag and bash them on the head before serving them. Still ended up with the darn things everywhere. Ended up bashing them left right and centre, on the counter, on the floor, on my kitchen cabinets, in my cleavage. ... Did have some in the bag as well. I divided these between little containers and into the flights they went. Nada. No interest whatsoever. Finally my baby Stars sampled some if them, but were not terribly impressed.
The mealworms on the other hand were a much better success. The Stars and Parrot Finch baby went after them. Societies tried, but no go. Canary looked at them with a raised eyebrow, then looked at me as if to say, "You first!"
In the small fry flight, the Orange Cheeks chased and ate them, the Red billed Fire Finches, ran away from them.
In my Zebra flight, zebras showed little interest, but Shaft Tail and Cut Throat enjoyed them. The Green Singers didn't even notice they were there.
And so... what can I say?

LOL, I should have kept the video going to show the finches going after the flies. Usually as soon as I step back, they go down and get them before they have a chance to get away.

I think I will set these flies free in the great outdoors. Maybe some of our out door birds will actually appreciate them as a treat before Winter sets in. It could be a real treat for some Sparrows, Chickadees or whatever else.
I am thinking that some of these darn things are breeding in my house, because I seem to have an over abundance of the damn things running around and flying around.
Tried it, didn't like it, and ain't doing it no more!

I don't know what your weather is there, but here they would die of the heat before anything found them to eat them. They don't do well in heat at all.
You could always just let the culture crash and then throw it away.

Honey, here it's not the heat they have to worry about. This morning it was +5 Celsius here, with a cold wind that would have frozen the tip of your nose.lol.

You may be on to something. Can you imagine the tiny sticks we'd have to order?

LOL I am fortunate and the fruit flies come to the aviary with a bit of baited lure (rotting fruit).
However, most others that feed live food usually put the container in the fridge for a bit. It does slow the critters down some. So Bugcicles are not far off.

Problem is, silly little birds want nothing to do with them. They just watch them running around and out if the flights.

LOL lovezebs, mine don't even wait for the poor suckers wings to dry. They hawk them from above, scare the whits out of the the bugs that flush and hide on the wire, then the birds dart around eating them all.
I must admit though, I'd only bother with live food for those waxbills that need it. The domesticated types that will live off egg food etc are much easier to please.

I only give them to my waxbills that require live food to raise their young. I feed them all the time, because I always have a culture going in case it's needed. Right now I have fire finches and gold-breasted waxbills sitting on eggs, so I am ready should anything hatch and they choose to actually feed it.
