i put a dish with dirt and seed in the cage. the seed are sprouted and growing the female has showed interest so far.

but i wanted to check with you all and make sure that its safe to do.

Sure, it just like when they sell that cat grass in the pet shops. Birds like to grub around in the dirt, but be sure it is organic potting soil, or clean dirt from your yard. If you use chemical pesticides, don't use dirt from your yard. And be prepared for a mess!

Only use a sterile compost, not soil from the garden...this can contain microscopic eggs for intestinal worms and other nasties.

[I plant wheat seeds in organic soil for my birds and they love it.
I usually wait until it has sprouted and grown about an inch and put the pot in the aviary. The gouldians especially go crazy for it.

Where do you get wheat seeds at ?

You're right, Paul, garden soil is probably asking for a lot of other problems!

here something funny the soil come from a plant i bought around st patty day and they eat it up so fast there was nothing left to regrow/

but her own bird seed no the most she did was toss around a few of the sprouts. and this morning i dropped two live meal worms in the sprout to see how she would react i think that why she toss the plants around. each little blade is around 3/4 of a inch ice and green

Years ago when I was raising spice finches I had a home made cage that was 6' long 2' wide and 3' tall. I had plastic trays that were 24x18 inches and 2.5' deep I used sterile potting soil, and their bird seed. I covered the soil with packaged hay. Withen two weeks they had a lawn in there cage which they loved. The cage floor was self cleaning I didn't even have to water the grass, as their bathes took care of that.
