Food other than seeds...

I would like to know if anyone feeds Zebras and Society's pellets, greens, fruits and eggs but no seeds?

Is it healthier for the birds? Better nutrition and less mess...

Thanks,

I feed a good seed mix
Many different kinds of vegetables
Fruits
Eggs/egg shells
Meal worms/both fresh and freeze dried
Sprouted seeds
Wild grass seed heads (in summer and Fall)

My birds never cared for pellets, and I couldn't see the point of pushing it. Birds have been living on this little planet for many years, eating seeds and other natural foods, can't see the point of pellets.

The diet you describe should work very well, I used to maintain my birds on such until it became inhibition to buy only pellets to feed a growing number of them. I now offer seeds with pellets always available as well.

Birds in the wild eat seeds, among other things. IMO, when birds have an all-pellet diet, we've taken all the fun out of eating for them. It may be balanced, but when I put my birds on an all-pellet diet, they became less active, less singing coming from the cages. To illustrate how strong the instinct is to hull seeds--I have offered hulled millet to juvenile weanling birds, thinking it would be easier for them to eat. To my amazement and amusement, those babies would sit and work those hulled seeds for all they were worth, trying to get the non-existent hulls off! IMO, a varied diet with not only seeds, but veggies, fruit for those birds that like fruit, minerals, insects. Pellets can be an addition to a varied diet.
