Frozen Seed...??

Post by finchmix22 » Mon Feb 23, 2015 2:31 pm

Well, I may need to move my own post to "finch chat"; however, I am asking a question, as well as, telling a cut finch story!
So, this morning in DFW TX, we had sleet, freezing rain and cold, cold, cold! I felt bad about the wild birds looking for food on the frozen sleet that covers my grass, Sooooo, I put some seed in a dish on a small table on my patio. Well, guess what? The wild house finches loved the seed so much, that even though it seed in the dish had frozen into a block, of seed due to the sleet, they were all taking turns pecking the block of frozen seed.

Here is a question, would our own finches enjoy frozen seed? I wonder sine the wild ones couldn't get enough of the frozen block of seed, even though I had sprinkled some onto the patio as well as put some in the dish. They are so cute!!!

Not that I'm an expert, BUT i did order some sprouting seed mix, and was told that once it's ready (all sprouted) that I can make large batches and put them in the freezer and to serve to the birds I can take it out and let it thaw, but I was also told that i can serve it frozen. I know it's a little different, but just my input, because I just asked this question, and was told that they like it frozen (the birds of the person that told me this) of course all birds are different, but that's my two cents!

When I sprout seeds, as ssoon as they chit I freeze the seed. I take put what they will eat that day and give it to them frozen. Then I pit the rest back in the freezer.

My gouldians seemed to not mind the frozen chitted seed at all. They actually ate every seed even the ones they wouldn't normally eat in the dry mix...

Should be perfectly fine... I would just make sure it doesn't sour... But I bet it won't last long enough to sour...

Zoos implement similar techniques to provide enrichment items for many species. I don't think it would hurt them in the slightest. And if they like it then keep it something fun once or twice a week.

Chestnut-breasted Mannikin

Hi Deb.

We eat popsicles
They eat seed-sicles
Too funny.....

Don't know if our spoilt rotten house babies would do well with frozen foods. Personally I wouldn't try it.

Sorry to hear about the terrible weather you are having. Stay safe and warm.
