I stopped at my local health food store today & asked for kelp. The owner said they are no longer able to get it because of the nuclear disaster in Japan (was that 1 or 2 yrs ago?).
Wonder if others have not been able to locate kelp.

The only thing I've been able to find regarding kelp and a nuclear reactor accident was here

Kelp Watch 2015 is a scientific campaign, based on collaboration between Dr. Steven L. Manley (Department of Biological Sciences, California State University- Long Beach) and Dr. Kai Vetter (UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory), and designed to determine the extent of possible radionuclide contamination (primarily Cesium-137 & -134) of our kelp forest ecosystem from seawater arriving from [Japan] in 2014. Initiated by Dr. Manley in early November 2013, the project relies on sampling canopy blades of the Giant Kelp (Macrocystis) and Bull Kelp (Nereocystis) several times during 2014.

Hmm... That's pretty curious!
I've never heard of this. As fetching mentioned, it's odd since kelp grows at an astounding rate that's on par with bamboo (perhaps even faster.) And I know it can be grown worldwide in many locations. So if you had a contaminated area, it would be simple enough to just harvest elsewhere or even farm it in a safe location.

I just ordered a pound of Organic Kelp Powder from a health food store here in our small town. With tax it was less than $10. I was thrilled.

Stopped at another "large" health food store yesterday & they were out of Kelp.
They did have about a quart of diamateous (sp?) earth for $17.99 which I did not buy. I have seen it for $3 something for a pound on the net.
My search will go on

I just now read this post, but in case you're still having trouble finding powdered kelp another reliable supplier is TheFinchFarm.com

They have a 3-ounce pouch for $5.95 or 1 pound for around $20 (I forget the exact price for the 1 lb).
It is a bit pricey, but worthwhile I think since it can be hard to come by.
