Am I feeding my finches the right stuff

Post by AndreasLon » Sat Aug 09, 2008 2:57 pm

Hi all,

I am a new comer to the world of finches having very recently acquired a couple of gouldian finches, one of bicheno finches and a couple of blue faced parrot finches. They all share the same cage, which is very spacious.

I would like to ask for your opinion on what I feed my birds and find out if I'm missing any vital ingredient or just any idea on what else I can add to their diet.

The main staple diet is a premium brand of seeds for finches. This has pellets with vitamins, amino acids, pro-biotics and minerals in it. The birds weren't very keen on these until I made them go hungry for one day with only the left over pellets left and once they've tried them they loved them! they always eat the pellets before the seeds now. The brand of the food is Prestige Premium by Versele-Laga (this may not be known brand outside of Europe).

They also get on alternate days some egg food that I make myself by mixing a whole hard boiled egg, including the shell, some apple, some whole grain bread and some orange juice (from the fruit, not a carton). This smells great and the birds like it. The other food they get every second day is some premium protein mix. The brand again is Premium Protein Mix by CeDe.

They have grit and oyster shells available and I often add some vitamins to their water.

Very occasionally I feed them sprouted seeds.

So far my birds haven't been too keen on green food, but I'm happy they are eating some apple with my home made egg food.

Unfortunately I have only had them for 1 month so I cannot say for sure if I am doing everything right.

Can you advise if I've left out any important ingredient? Anything else I can add to their diet? I may occasionally give them boiled rice, but I am not too sure about the nutritional value of a hulled and boiled seed.

Can I come round for dinner? :D

Good diet there ...in fact bit over the top.
Be watchful of those blue faces they can be very aggressive when breeding and should really be kept seperate.
Fill out your profile so we can see where you hail from.
Paul.
