Bread, anyone ?

Post by lovezebs » Thu Nov 26, 2015 3:51 pm

Hello Friendly Finchers.

Has any one ever offered their birdlings bread ?
Munching on a slice of bread yesterday, I had numerous little beady eyes watching me with envy. I thought, what the heck, and gave them some bread. Well, you'd have thought it was Manna from heaven the way they took to it.

Bread Ingredients:
Whole grains, whole wheat flour including the germ, water, ancient grain blend (flaxseed, millet, spelt flakes, kamut brand wheat flakes, barley flakes, poppy seeds, amaranth, whole quinoa), sugar, yeast, rye flakes, wheat gluten, soluble raisin syrup, salt, canola oil, vinegar, acetylated tartaric acid esters of mono- and diglycerides, calcium propionate, monoglycerides, sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate, soybean lecithin, sesame seeds.

So what do you guys think ? I already know what my birds think :-D

What do you think about the sugar and yeast?

Honestly no idea, that's why I threw it out as a question .

I am by no means suggesting this as a full time diet, but as a treat for once In a while.

I was simply amazed by how much they enjoyed it.

Hopefully someone else will share their ideas and thoughts about it.

I think it depends on the type of bread as well. If you're looking at plain white bread, I would say, that just like for us humans, it has very little nutritional value (if any).
Although, there is nothing like a fresh loaf of French bread, all crusty and warm , but I wouldn't offer it to my birds (that would be all for me), lol.

watch the sugar and salt intake on that... what brand is this? Is it fresh made or packaged. You can also go to your bakery in the grocery store and getbread dough and add chopped veggies, soaked pellets... or make up you own dough recipe minus the salt and sugar and raisin syrup.

The ingredient sound good down to the quinoa... after that it is questionable

Hi Cindy, how was the turkey ?

Regarding the bread, here it is :

Let me just say once more, that this was a little treat (like giving the kids cookies). They enjoyed it and I enjoyed watching them enjoying it.

I know folks that use a good organic whole wheat bread for their birds every once in a while. Some soak it (forget what they soak it in, not milk) and sprinkle seeds on it. You can also dip it in egg and bake it or in a pan on the stove... use olive oil to coat the pan or baking tray, avoid salted butter/butter

I do not feed bread to the birds...

Old fashined breeders (many moons ago) used to soak bread in milk to feed baby birds. Not quite sure how that used to work out, but it was done.

would not use milk since birds do not digest lactose.

the sodium count in the bread is Sodium 160mg 7% according to the finch info center finches daily intake is .15% perhaps in making your own bread you reduce or eliminate the salt... to much can cause issues for the kidneys. Bread is mostly carbs... if the carbs are not burned they sit in the body and turns to fat. The potassium level in the bread is also higher than what is recommended for a finch.

Though many feed it ocassionally you may want to use a healthy bread, lower salt/no salt and not make this a weekly thing. Shredded carrots, kale veggies are better alternatives.

Back then they did not have all the advanced nurishing foods we have now available for our birds... we have come a long way in knowledge and products since then.

Old time breeders even threw fish heads in the aviaries, which the birds ate...unfortunately flies carry disease and breeders lost birds. Thank goodness for all the advances in products!!

cindy

My guys get all the good stuff regularly, no worries :-)
Not using milk, just mentioning that it was used in the past.
Once in a while a few little bits of bread I'm sure will be fine.

Thanks :-)

Fish heads !
I do remember reading about offering canned tuna and cheese (but don't think I'll try that either) .

I will ask at the bakery if they have a label on a whole wheat or a mutligrain next time I go to the store. It would be interesting to compare it to the packaged loaves stocked on the shelves.

I do not feed bread either since there is a large array of other foods they can have and made just for them.
