Rox monotwine I saw charcoal at the Petshop today that they say is good for the well-being of Gouldians and Canaries. Do you give charcoal to your gouldians?

I add charcoal to my mineral mix as well. All my finches have access to it.

I add a small amount of charcoal to my grit, along with bird clay, grated mineral block, and grated cuttle bone.
I offer a small amount of this mixture to all my flights, scattered on the floor.

Marius, I have never fed charcoal. I also stopped feeding a mineral grit mix over a year ago. None of my birds were interested in it. Being in planted aviary's, I think they find enough grit, sand etc in the soil.

Yes, and I seriously doubt if anyone has seen their finches eating the grit from their mineral/ grit tray.

I have seen my birds many times in my mineral mix eating bits and pieces. I do not offer sand or grit though.

If I see my finches checking out the contents of the grit cup, I would surely jump in joy.

I saw that it said "For caged birds" on the packet. Then you don't need it in an aviary. Obviously the petshop workers would tell me that I definitely need it because they want more sales.

All birds need a mineral mix (not grit/gravel) for calcium and other minerals.

My birds love my mineral mix, which consists of oyster shell grit, Morning Bird's trace mineral powder, eggshells, Hagen's clay-cal, a bit of charcoal. They visit that cup multiple times a day usually.

I should think they regard all captive birds to be caged birds. After all, an aviary is also a huge cage.
