They don't need the grit that is often sold in pet stores as bird gravel. They can use the grit that is sold as oystershell grit, as that is one source of calcium for them. I offer a mineral mix in a free-choice cup to my birds. Besides the oystershell, they might like a little bird charcoal, crushed up eggshells, or a cuttlebone.
There is a list of acceptable and unacceptable foods in the Finch Information Center. Most members offer an assortment of veggies, plus some egg food, to their birds.

Tish Hagen products are readily available in Canada. Check out this link for the oystershell grit. You can also put in your location and this link will tell you where to find Hagen products:

You can offer it free choice in a cup, the birds will help themselves.

I make egg bread with my food processor. The dozen eggs with shells get ground up. They pick what they want out of it. Someone recommended to me using the Bird bread recipe because you don't have to worry so much about spoilage. They also love the stuff. When I first started reading here I fed bird seed. Now I make up a daily platter that gets consummed. My birds love kale, cabbage, romaine lettuce a little cucumber now and then and occasionally cantelope. For my birds the trick is the fine chop. They prefer the processor fine chop. They eat with gusto! Today I put out about 2/3 of a cup of pulsed kale power medley an organic salad mix and the other half of the plate is pulsed bird bread. All the greens are gone and by morning so will the rest. I have 4 adult socies and two fledgling who sit right in the middle of the plate. they are really feathered pork.
Good luck it's fun.

Re: Safe Foods in MODERATION.
I read the List of Safe Foods in Moderation. What is considered "In Moderation" ?
So, how frequently are you supposed to feet your birds the items listed under "Safe Foods" which includes healthy fruits and vegetables ?

I personally have given my birds veggies like broccoli two or even three times a week without problems, but I do try to vary the veggies more.

Society finches are probably the most easiest of finches to cater for,
Right grit wise yes as Sally has stated that fine oyster shell is the way to go but if you can't get it then normal mineral grit is ok
A basic finch diet is all that is needed and when it comes to breeding them I then add soak seed to there diet along with some egg food,
Now green food there is numerous amounts of different veggies that can be fed but the problem is you can over do it sometimes,
Beginners tend to try and feed everything they can think off and half the time the foods don't get touched or eaten,
It's like you going into a restaurant and trying to eat yer way through every dish on the menu ....absolutely impossible
I use cede egg food and mix 1 x 250ml bottle of liquid honey to 1 kg of egg food, to this mix I add some finely grated or liquidised carrot and Brockley, I then mix this all up with a fork in a very large Tupperware box and this can be used and kept in the fridge for upto 1 week
Along with fresh drinking and bathing water every day this should be an ample but simple dietary requirement for all society finches which is the sole reason why I personally specialise in them meself,
Birds that create no hassle
