What my Finches were fed in the Bird Store

Post by JerseyGuy » Thu Jul 07, 2016 7:57 am

Ok, well I found out what my finches were eating in the Bird Store where I bought them ::

- Abba 1900 Finch Food
- Crushed cuttlebone
- Kale, chicory, broccoli, corn, peas
- mealworms as a treat
- Recommended chopped hard-boiled egg

I already have enough Bird seed to last quite awhile, so I won't invest in the Abba 1900 Finch Food.
I will have to figure out how to 'Crush' a cuttlebone.
Will have to buy Kale, chicory, broccoli, corn and peas
Mealworms? I guess they come freeze-dried in a jar.
Hard-boiled eggs - I'm still going to have to keep experimenting with this to get the finches to eat this.

JerseyGuy To crush a cuttlebone, you can just break it into smaller bits and crush them in a mini food processor or similar appliance. Some people just scrape the soft part off.

Whenever I want to crush anything I put it in a storage bag, leave the bag open, and use a hammer .

Meal worms come dried out or live. My parrot finch loves live meal worms. Get the mini size if you want to try them live. Also, meal worms can cause weight gain so just a treat on occasion. My gouldian loves oranges too.

That's what I was thinking too, LOL! Bird stores around here feed pellets, which the finches nearly always reject, so the employees drop a layer of seed on top. Which makes a ginormous mess, but apparently its the only way to cleave unto "store policy" without starving the poor things to death.

Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. May the earth rise up beneath you, with home in your heart, and your person waiting.

Be sure if you crush the cuttlebone to use only the soft part, not also the hard shell. The pieces would be sharp and could injure the birds.
