Meal Worms

Post by Chubbychickenbones » Sat Jan 21, 2017 9:45 pm

My Cordon Bleu's went after and ate worms the first while and first day I ever gave them some. Now it's been a couple weeks and they won't touch them. Anyone have any idea?

I think I read some of you crush them???
Past:
Zebra's, Society, Saint Helena and two hummingbird sized ones that I do not know or remember names of.
Present:
Two Red Cheeked Cordon Bleu's. One male and female paired.
One Green singer

The ones you are offering right now, are they out of the same batch you fed them two weeks ago?

Are we talking live or freeze dried?

I crush the freeze dried ones, and add them to their egg food.
The live ones are served fresh.

Chubbychickenbones - I was just wondering if you had kept them in the fridge or at room temperature. If not refrigerated, they tend to grow and once they get bigger, my birds don't eat them anymore. Or could the 'bedding' (bran) have gone bad? Then your birds might not want them anymore either.
Just trying to find an explanation.

I have never fed wax worms, so I honestly don't know.

Good thoughts, thank you . I thought they were getting bigger myself but not by much. I normally put them in the fridge except in the day I may have them out.

My CB female loves wax worms. Have you used wax worms?

No, I've never tried them. One time I bought mini superworms (because they were out of mini mealworms) and was told those don't need to be refrigerated. Well, they sure grew and grew and my birds wouldn't touch them. I tried putting them in the fridge anyway but the cold definitely wasn't good for them and a lot died.
Right now I have mostly male birds but will give the wax worms a try in the future.
