Birds still don't need em though .....lol
In all honesty, who are we, to make that judgement???
Ask Cindy or Debbie or any other experienced Gouldian, zebra or bengalese fancier if their birds need to eat live food, I think you'll clearly find that the answer is most highly likely to be NO 8-|

Experience prevails

Sweetie, I have to agree with you that experience prevails...

Although true that live food might not be necessary, some Gouldians do eat live foods if they are offered.

So although feeding live foods may not be absolutely necessary, it would appear that many finches do enjoy it, and do eat live food in the wild, especially when raising young.
Right ok Elana before we go any further with this little debate, I don't think that yer really getting the jist of it,

I specifically said that zebras, bengalese and gouldians DO NOT need live food, yes it's obvious that some will eat live food but I specifically stated that they don't actually need it =;

Yes there are many sites that will say finches eat live food, whilst some obviously do rely on such foods as mentioned there are definitely some finches that simply do not need it,

Don't forget that I've got many Australian freinds and reliable contacts that breed finches out in Australia on a very big scale, I am constantly discussing about the use of live food as the majority of all of my birds that I personally keep all require live food and am obviously very well up in this subject and discussion.

That list of sites that you've put up is nothing new to me as I've seen all of those sites before, don't forget Elana I have a thirst for knowledge in the bird world and am constantly researching info 8-|

I stand by my ground and still say that ZEBRAS, BENGALESE and GOULDIANS........DO NOT need live food #-O

Please don't think that I'm deliberately picking holes Elana but more so trying to state a point :YMHUG:

I do get the gist of the conversation Stuart.

All I am saying, is that apparantly in the wild Gouldians, Zebras, and Munias , have been seen to consume insects, etc. when breeding and raising young...
So why not offer them the same opportunity in captivity?

We as humans decide that they DON'T NEED IT, because they can be raised without it. That's why I was saying, who are we to judge?

Some breeders, raise their birds on seed alone, and still manage to breed them and produce young ( albeit probably not very healthy young).

What I am saying, is that we should offer them a variety of foods (live foods included) and every opportunity to enjoy life, not just exist.

And by the way, I wasn't born yesterday either, and have been keeping birds for 40+ years, and have been known to do my fair share of reading as well :-B .

No worries Elana, it's often good to have different opinions :D

I suppose everyone's different in how they cater for their birds and rightly each to their own,

I know you've obviously had birds for a good number of years but many of us study different things if yer get me jist,

We'll never stop learning and I suppose that's what makes us the bird keepers that we are today :YMSMUG:

Incidentally I noticed that you were at one time on John wrennes forum of Ireland, did it not appeal to you as you were only on there for 26 days :-??

Interesting that you know that I was on John's forum for exactly 26 days...
I don't recall having mentioned how many days I was on there, and it's surprising that you should know this, when I don't recall the number of days myself :-?

I like John, he's a lovely person, and the people on the forum are a nice bunch of guys and I think one lady.

However, they mainly keep British species of birds, which I don't have the oportunity to keep and know little about.

The number of days is calculated from viewing yer profile Elana,

Clearly shows the date of joining to the last day of activity, equates to about 26 days,

1st January 2015 - 26th January 2015 and with a total of 64 posts :-B

like I said i do a lot of research and am very observant :YMSMUG:

I've been on there for a while because there are a few lads who do keep foreign on there and there's been a fair few discussions on softbills :-BD

For those looking for live food:

I found a site called "Speedyworm.com" that sells what they call "spikes," or live fly maggots.

I don't have any connection to them.

FWIW,

Fraza:

I've seen some folks here asking about "gentles," so I thought I'd relate that someone sold them under another name.

I want to keep some birds that use live food, such as wax bills. I'm not sure how long a batch of "spikes" would last. At $8 per 500, it might get pricey.
