Hello everyone. It's me Nick, again. I have a few more questions again. First off I am begging to breed my zebra finches and I'm wondering what the diet for them should be. I've heard I need to give egg food but how do I make it and how would i serve it to them and how much? So many questions I hope people can answer. Please respond quickly. Thanks in advance.

Hi there, I buy my egg food, from a place that sells bird supplies etc. You could probably buy it from a local pet store. I also give my zebra finches canary seed and budgie seed and supplement it with greens like chickweed and silver beet. Also make sure they have lots of Cuttle bone available.

I thought I answered that in another of your Threads.

***"First of all, "please" make sure that you have homes lined up for whichever babies you may or may not breed in the future, before breeding Zebra Finches (or any birds for that matter of fact). Check with Pet Shops in your area, to see if they are interested in buying Zebra Finches. Check with bird groups in your area to see if there is a market for Zebbies in your vicinity.

I mention this, because Zebras tend to be very easy breeders, that anyone can breed, and not too many people want to spend more than $5-$10 dollars on. We have people in my town giving them away, because they can't sell them, and there is a bunch of them at our Humane Society, that people just surrendered because they couldn't find homes for them.

Regarding breeding siblings, that's a big NO-NO. It doesn't matter if they are from a different clutch of eggs, if they are from the same parents, they are still 100% siblings and should never be bred together. You will end up with smallish, sickly babies with possible deformities, who will get progressively worse and worse with each subsequent generation.

***As in regards to diet:

A good quality Finch seed mix
A variety of greens and vegetables
Hard boiled eggs
Boiled, crushed eggshells
Oystershell grit
A mineral block
An iodine block

Also offer them a bath of tepid water everyday, they will love it .

And....

***"Egg food is:

Hard boiled eggs, boiled for 10 minutes
Peeled (save the shells)
Either grated, mashed, or put through a potato ricer

I always add some store bought eggfood for birds, just to dry the mix a bit

You can also add: crumbled spray millet, pulverised freeze dried mealworms, some herb salad for birds, some shaved broccoli florrets, etc.

Serve in small amounts, and remove left over after a few hours to avoid spoiling.

Dry the shells, crush them, and serve them to your birds for Calcium.

Thanks.
@lovezebs
You partially answer it in another post. I will have homes lined up in the future but right now I am just expanding my collection.
