What should I grow?

Post by FinchLover&Breeder » Mon Mar 26, 2018 5:40 pm

Hey guys it's me Nick again. This post is just designed so everyone can know what types of plants that people can grow for their birds. I personally am starting to get back into gardening a bit and want to incorporate my birds into it. I have zebra finches, society finches(s), and cockatiels. What can I grow for them for a nice treat? If someone could provide a list for each bird species of what can be grown for them then it would be perfect. Maybe even make this a sticky for future use.

How do you grow millet? Any thing else I can grow? Specific things for each bird species?

Millet can be grown by scattering bird seed in the garden. It starts as a grass and in a few months grows millet sprays at the top of the stems. Birds love to eat them before they dry out when they are still green.

Ok cool. So just take some dirt and plant some unused bird seed just under the surface?

It would be good if you could protect the seed from squirrels and other wildlife. All of your birds will enjoy these greens.

My canaries and Gouldians like dandelion, especially the flower heads.

Lets me weed the yard and feed the birds at the same time :) .

I will, (if spring ever gets here), grow kale, bak Choy and various types of lettuce. I think 10 different varieties of lettuce. Lastly some Chinese cabbage. We have tons of millet growing along the farm fields to feed doves and pheasants for later in the year. I pick a few pounds and add it to their diet. They love it when it's still green and succulent. And Ofcourse dandelions!!! Plenty of that everywhere. They also eat radishes and kolarabi. I leave all in their natural state. I don't put in blender. They prefer whole leaves and such.
