I put some large pieces of good quality lettuce in their cage and they went nuts!!! It was absolutely hilarious to watch them throw around and pick off pieces of the leaves. I noticed that the society finch does peck at the little cordon bleu when she approaches to eat the lettuce, but she holds her ground and the society eventually gets involved in the food. Is this normal behavior???

I left a large cup of pellet food in the cage today and very little seed. I saw the bleu eating it when I got home!!! PROGRESS!!! I hope to have them switched over by the end of the week!!!

I must admit that I do enjoy them even though they are not interactive. They just exist and that's just great with me. They are quite entertaining. My cordon bleu and society finch now sit next to each other on the perch at night!!

I have a strawberry and a swee that do the same thing over the cucumber when I feed it. The tiny swee scolds the strawberry and tries to chase her away, but she holds her ground! I'm going to have to put 2 slices in just to break it up.....

A friend on another bird forum suggested that I put some freshly washed and still wet lettuce in the finch cage and my little friends also went nuts. Weeeeeeee!

Of course, more cage mess... more poopers.... well worth the entertainment!

lol I use those little black plastic clips that are used for holding paper work and such together to put lettuce in the cage. I pinch open the clip over a horizontal bar then stuff the ends of the lettuce in and release and voila! the lettuce hangs neatly and they can pull off piece of it. I think it's also easier for them to eat that way b/c it gives them enough leverage to rip off pieces.

Hey...good idea Thalia! I have used wooden clothes pins to attach some flax seed pods within the cage but I think those black office clips would be stronger.

As I sit and type I can hear William the male finch pulling at the flax seed. He works at that all day!
