isobea, why Perilla? What does it have? By the way, Perilla is also a horticultural plant, grown in gardens for it's colorful foliage. It looks like a Coleus.

Dave - Oh boy, you would have to ask, wouldn't you. I wish I could remember the advantages of perilla. When I lived in Germany (over 30 years ago) I belonged to a finch club and most of the birds we were breeding were oily seed loving/needing species (European goldfinches, siskins, linnets, bullfinches etc.). Perilla was readily available and was said to be less fattening than other oily seeds.
I have planted Perilla (the one that looks much like Coleus) before but I never got any seed heads. I just bought a seed packet of 'Shiso Perilla' (Perilla frutescens crispa). I'll give that a try this year.
