Can birds have too much egg food?

I typically offer my birds my own version of egg food daily. I make it in a fairly large batch and freeze t until I need it. All it is is boiled egg with the shell on and some sort of green leafy (this batch was kale) chopped up into a mash in a food processor. My societies go crazy for it, and I usually place it in the cage in the mornings and remove the bit that is left in the afternoons. They also have free choice to their typical seed mix. My question is this: I’ve been letting them eat as much as they want—will they eat too much if this and will it cause any problems. This group of birds is laying eggs and hopefully will have babies to raise soon.

Eggfood every day is good for breeding, but free-feeding eggfood when they aren't breeding or moulting may lead to overeating. What size are the cages? If they are long flights or aviaries, then the birds generally get more exercise, so the excess fat should be burned off. In a small cage, they are definitely risking obesity should they eat too much eggfood year-round.

Have you checked their weight? Finches tend to get fat deposits on their abdomen and crop regions if they are overweight. Putting an overweight bird on a low-fat diet of carbohydrate-rich seeds and some low-calorie vegetables without eggfood for several weeks during non-breeding season may correct this. Here's what a fat finch looks like: Image
