can I do my own oyster shell powder?

Post by MalditoGorrion » Wed Dec 17, 2008 3:35 am

Hi friends

I was reading an article here about the Crushed Oyster Shell and I wonder if I can go to the beach take some oysters shells and do my own oyster shell powder. Is that possible? Can I use any kind of shell or must be only oyster?
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush O_o

You can make up your own oyster shell powder, but I do not know if other types of shells would be ok to use. The reason oyster shell is used is that the calcium content of the shell is so high. I would probably try to sanitize the shell by boiling them as well to kill any bacteria (beach sand harbors alot of bacteria). Also, keep in mind that oyster shell is about as hard as concrete so breaking it up is no easy task. Once you get it borken up then you can powder it with most coffee grinders. DO NOT BREATH THE DUST! It is really bad for your lungs, and can cause breathing issues over time. Cuttlebone is easier to powder, but the dust is just as bad as the oyster shell.
