What does everyone use to hold Millet Sprays? I know it is not sanitary to put the sprays on the cage floor, but my 2 'kids' go through them like candy. Can't imagine how yall deal with it with more 'kids'.

I would like to hear what you have set up to make sure they have a fresh, uncontaminated supply.

I use those little metal clips you see in the pet stores. I stick the stem of the spray of millet up through the top wire (from the inside of the cage) and then just grab it from the outside with a clip. I let it just dangle loosely. Hang it near, but not too near a perch.

My GBs stretch to try to reach the nearest seeds, then hop up onto the millet spray and eat away, while it swings! Even when the 4 babies were in there sometimes there were 4 or 5 hanging onto the millet all at the same time, they really got it swinging!

I figured it makes them "forage" a bit for their food, rather than clipping it right beside a perch.

Since my aviary is open, I drape them over a perch and they all just hang on! It is too funny! But they actually perch onto the millet to eat.

I had read somewhere that this was good for them and good exercise.
It stays really clean this way.

I use plastic clips to hold them through the top of the cages like Franny does. The finches either eat from the perches or land on the millet and chow down!

Thanks. I've been wondering if anyone uses these

or these

Sounds like It would be better to just hang them from a clip.

(haven't figured out how to post a pic yet.. sorry).

Some of those commercial millet holders don't work very well. Either they are too small for the spray, especially if you use the Golden California brand, which are quite plump, or they knock off lots of seeds as you try to fasten the spray to the holder. I used to use clothespins, sticking the end of the spray up thru the bars of the top of the cage, but clothespins don't always hold too securely and the spray would wind up on the floor. I find those binder clips have a stronger spring to them, so hold pretty securely. Get them at office supply stores, or I even found some at Big Lots.

I actually did try those, but didn't like the way it clipped to the wire - too small a hook. The metal or plastic hooks that they sell for holding lettuce etc work just as well, and are less noticeable (I like the more natural look of just the millet hanging down).

I just got 2 Zebra finches today, and hung that millet holder in the cage...they hang on that and peck away, almost like wild finches and the finch niger seed sock that I have outside in the back yard....

Like Sally, I use the binder clips you can buy at office supply stores. They are cheap and very effective, and I wouldn't use anything else.
