My little beepers like to eat over or in the seed cup. There is both seed and seed husks in the cup so it is hard to determine how much seed is left in there. Should I try to separate the seeds from the discarded husks or just dump it and start fresh?

I thought there was just a recent thread about recycling seed, but darned if I can find it now. With just one cage, you can just take the cup outside and blow on it to blow the hulls out, leaving the good stuff for the birds. A lot of finches won't dig down thru a bunch of hulls to find the rest of the seeds.

Sally, I think you posted pretty close to Bill's - he just posted the link to the previous recent thread about removing the hulls.

I swear by the seed hoppers that are mentioned in this old thread. That way you don't have to worry about if there are seeds left in a dish or just hulls. I dump the trays from the seed hoppers into my Button Quail cages for treats for them, otherwise the Buttons eat a high protein non-medicated crumble. That way I don't worry if the birds didn't eat all of the seed from the hopper. I use seed hoppers in all of my cages. However in my aviary I hang a tube type outside bird feeder that has the little perches all up the sides of it. They all use it including my Bourkes Parakeet. I love not having to worry about seed cups and if they have seed in them or not.

This is a finch feeder you are talking about? I have often wondered if one of those would work and they would eat from it.
I tried a regular bird feeder, but what a mess!!

Many friends of mine from the Spanish forum where I post made their own machines. It’s very easy to do. You only need some aluminum pieces, a computer fan (a powerful one) and two plastic containers to keep your seeds and husks. Here are some photos:

I don’t have so many birds in this moment so I blow the husks myself but I am going to build a machine like this soon.

Must have missed this post, sorry! Yes I use the finch tube type plastic outdoor bird feeder in my aviary. It is hung low below the wire so they don't spill the seeds everywhere. My aviary is shaded plexiglass down low. A lot of my birds like to pick through what was spilled on the floor of the aviary too. They love to forage. Here is a link to a similar one:
