Does anyone know about making eggfood? i made some today about 1/2 cup, i was wondering if there is a better way to dry the eggshells out rather than using the microwave?also how long would the eggfood keep in the fridge ?

Maybe if you microwaved the whole egg it would explode! But if you've boiled the eggs, and just want to dry the shells, then the oven would work, too. Or just a minute or two in the microwave.

If you are just using the shells from eggs you've broken to cook for yourself, then you need to really cook the shell to kill the germs - someone said to put them in a deep dish or they'll burn. At least 2 minutes in the microwave. I'd suggest you put a glass of water in the microwave with the dish of eggshells. Anytime you are putting something in it that doesn't have much moisture that will help prevent sparks / hot spots.

Another way aside from microwaving is using the oven at 350 for 10 or 15 minutes.

To be honest, i think its quicker and more likely to kill anything with a microwave. I microwave my egg shells for 3 minutes.

But for my egg food recipe, basically i just boil an egg. then toss the entire thing after its cooled down into a food processor. Whole egg... with shell.
Blend it up into a paste, put it in tupperware and sprinkle vitamins (avian trio from PetPower or PowerPet). Then i mix it all up. When i serve it in the AM, i put the egg food paste into the dish and then sprinkle dry bee pollen on top.

My female goes CRAZY for it. She knows in the mornings its coming, the male is usually out of the nest, and when i grab the dish to put new stuff in, he calls to her and he jumps in the nest and rotates out (since she is incubating and brooding now) and he sits and she comes out and waits right next to the spot i put the dish. As soon as i drop the dish, she hits the egg food hard. She used to pick out the egg shell by itself and eat it when she was laying eggs, now she doesnt take much of the egg shell but devours the eggfood and bee pollen.

thanks, your recipe sounds easier than mine i mash mine up with a food until it resembles coarse meal, but i have to crush up the eggshells with the end of a rolling pin, i think i will look for a small food processer , i do have a small food chopper would that work? also i have never given bee pollen , what does it do for the finches?

You dont need the bee pollen, but here are details of exactly what I have.

http://www.ladygouldianfinch.com/product_beepollen.mgi

and I use this as the vitamin supplement i put in it.

http://www.ladygouldianfinch.com/product_aviantrio.mgi

I use a super tiny food processor i bought at walmart. I think its a 2 cup food processor and it cost me 12 dollars. The egg shell gets down to little chunks, about a square centimeter, my finchs dont seem to mind the size one bit.

I heard you could get a coffee bean grinder for the egg shell, would easily turn the egg shell to a nice fine powder that you could mix into the egg food paste.

You can do so much with egg food. People say they even put seed into it and just grind it up. Meal worms, etc. Be creative and make something the finches like and eat readily. Experiment till you get it right.

Don't know if you've looked at the info on the FIC regarding egg-food or if anyone has offered that to you..

bee pollen

does anyone freeze their bee pollen? i bought about 1 cup of bee pollen from a health food store and it was on the shelf , then i read it will keep longer if you refridgerate it. I think if my finches like it they will go through it fairly fast.

I freeze my eggfood. I have only the 2 little Goldbreasts, so they don't go through much eggfood, not even when they were feeding 4 babies. And because I leave for work at 5 am and don't get home until 6 pm, I don't want to be making eggfood daily.

So when I do make it, I do about 3 boiled eggs, add the veggies, chop with a small handheld chopper, then freeze it in small little containers about double the size of an ice cube. I get about 4 or 5 of these containers. I leave one in the fridge, and it lasts about 3 or 4 days. I add the dry eggfood to it and dried bugs, and feed about a heaping teaspoon to my pair. More if they finish it. I take a new container out of thefreezer the night before I think I'll run out of the stuff in the fridge.

I also freeze my canned mealworms once the can is open, as they last for ages with only 2 birds. I take a few out, set on a paper towel to defrost, and by the time the cage cleaning chores are done, they get chopped in about 3 pieces and get added to the eggfood, or sometimes just tossed on the bottom of the cage (they prefer them that way only when feeding babies).

Hmmm I haven't tried freezing my eggfood but it would help if I could rather than having to make it every second day. I leave at 5:45am and don't get home til 4pm. I'll try it this weekend - I boil 12 eggs at once anyway and use them 2 or 3 at the time during the week. I'll chop up a bigger batch of boiled eggs (all 12?), add soaked seed and freeze.

Thanks Franny! :)

I have been freezing my egg food for a very long time I keep it in the freezer for a month at least when I make it I boil at least 18 eggs at a time ,I don't put anything else in the egg food until I thaw a pack out then I add veggies or soaked seed, and keep in fridge for a couple days .
I freeze it in plastic bags enough for a few days,I try to flatten the baggy so all the air is out before I freeze

all this crazy fancy stuff. My birds are not picky, they just inhale anything i put in the cage.

Heck, i am gonna throw a tire in, i am sure they will eat it.
