Wheat Germ Oil/Cod Liver Oil
I have just started using this, so I can't vouch for whether it will work or not, but a breeder on the African Finches yahoo group did a thread about how he feeds his finches naturally. He is raising 28 species in 80-some cages, so I figure he must be doing something right.
He hardboils the eggs, then mashes shell and all. To each four eggs, he adds 1 tsp. wheat germ oil and 1 tsp. cod liver oil. He then adds enough yellow cornmeal to make the mixture crumbly. He offers this to his birds every day. Cod liver oil supplies D3, and wheat germ oil supplies vitamin E. He also gives them veggies--broccoli and cabbage every day, and the third veggie is either mustard greens, collards, that type green.
I have an old pair of Strawberries which would eat nothing except finch seed mix and spray millet--wouldn't even touch anything else. They now clean their dish of eggfood, leaving only the grains of cornmeal behind.
It will take time to see if this will bring about better feathering, more energy, more libido, better breeding results.

Sally, I read that post as well, and have planned to pick up that orange flavoured cod liver oil he mentions he got at wal-mart.
I especially worry that my birds don't get any natural sunlight, and it's hard to know if the so called Full Spectrum bulbs are actually providing them with enough UV to make a real difference. I've also read that the bulbs are only really "good" for about a year, even though they still provide light, they don't provide the full spectrum once they get old. At the cost of those bulbs, I'm sure I won't be replacing mine every year! So this sounds like an excellent way to make sure they get their vitamin D.
If you get your old berrys to breed with this supplement, then there will be a real rush on Cod Liver Oil at Walmart and London Drugs, from everyone here on the forum.

Re: hi
Thanks for sharing that Sally. I always want to try new things to make a better life for my finches.
Now let me show my ignorance....... I have never bought those things before. Where would one find that?

I've also been using Cod Liver Oil and Wheat Germ oil as someone on here mentioned it to me in December to get my Pastel Blue and my Silver Gouldian males "in the mood". Both cages are now sitting on 6 eggs each as of today! I don't know if it's due to using the CLO and the WGO mixed in with my HB egg/soakseed and some dry eggfood but something is working for the first time in over a year for them! And I have 3 other cages with eggs as well.

sally, I'm sorry for hijacking this post but perhaps you should check out your local home depot or Lowes. here on Long Island, the prices are reasonable and only slightly marked up from normal florescent light bulbs.

Sean,
Thanks, it was me who was complaining about the cost of the full spectrum lightbulbs. Unfortunately mine are T5 size, made for an aquarium light fixture...Not the standard T8. I wanted something small, streamlined and light, so I can wheel the cage around with the light still on it. But never gave a thought to how much more the replacement bulbs would cost. They are $20 at Petsmart, and Home Depot doesn't sell that size in full spectrum here. We don't have Lowe's here in Western Canada...

I have 7 4' double light fixtures that take T12 bulbs, so those I can get at the big box stores. Wal-Mart now carries a 2' double light fixture, but it takes T8 bulbs, and they don't carry full spectrum bulbs for this light. I have other 18" fixtures, and I can get full spectrum bulbs for them. I always get the cheap full spectrum bulbs, can't afford those super expensive ones sold online for birds.
