I finally bought some Mineral Grit and Herb Salad for my Owls from Tammy at JustBirdStuff the other day. I love the smell of that Herb Salad....reminds me of Italian Bread!
Hopefully the Herb Salad wont get them into breeding mode again will it?
So far the Owls have not really tried the new stuff but I hope they will get to like it. I will have to try some new presentation methods I guess.

I add it into the seeds or eggfood. My Goulds are bad at trying new things so most stuff I have to be creative with too. They are also very picky where they eat, they will never eat out of a plate or tray at the bottom of the cage, even when I left some millet across the cage they wouldn't go over to it, it has to be on the food side, silly birds!!
My societies on the other hand are such a pleasure, they eat everything and I just add it to a plate I make of mixed veggies, eggfood, etc.

Mine are funny that way, too. They will eat out of their treat cup which is up high near a perch. But if I put a plate on the bottom they won't touch it. So I just scatter extras on the floor of the cage, and cover with a bit of meadowgrass hay... and they think they "found" it and will eat it, but not when I've served it to them on a plate!

I've added Herb Salad to their seeds and also have some free choice in a separate dish. They like it best when it's freshly put in, or refreshed.

Deborah, I'm a little surprised your Owls haven't venured down to try the Herb Salad. I haven't have a bird yet that doesn't love it. As far as it getting them into the mood to breeding again? I wouldn't think so, it's supposed to be for medicinal purposes, but you never know. Maybe the Yarrow Root is related to Spanish Fly.

I mixed the Herb Salad in with some other seed mix and I
think they are picking at it....can't be sure yet.
**A Funny Moment To Share: I told Hubby about giving the Owls the new Herb Salad and they weren't eating it so he goes over to their cage and says to them "
Don't You Know There are Starving Finches in Austrailia?.....You should be eating your food!"

Naturally - that's why they are starting to eat it!

My kids never fell for that line.

At my house mom told us to think of the starving kids in India! I hate to tell you that it didn't work for me either. NOTHING was going to make me eat liver!

LOL @ Fran!! Liver is the absolute worst for me and I still will not eat it today nor have I ever had it since I moved out of my parents home!
We got the "starving kids in China" routine!!

When I was little, I was anemic, and the doctor told my Mom to make me eat lots of liver. Lucky for her, I was the only one of five kids who liked liver--love it to this day! However, my brothers and sister were not thrilled at how often we ate liver at our house 'because it's good for Sally'!

Well Mom gave up on the liver, since we wouldn't (make that couldn't) eat it without washing it down with a half bottle of ketchup! Guess she thought that kind of spoiled the "healthy" aspect.
I often think that it was watching Mom eat things like the turkey's neck, pig's feet, and tongue (she was of a generation that grew up on the farm, through a depression - nothing was ever wasted)... that sowed the seeds for me to eventually become a vegetarian!

I put some of the Herb Salad on the bottom of the cage and they are really into it now....finally!
Fran...my Inlaws were the same way....used everything but the "Moo". They would make Blood Sausage...Blood Pancakes.....Pickled Tongue....Ewwwww!
And my Hubby remembers having to use the outhouse when he was little....they used the Sears catalog and Corn Cobs instead of TP
OH....I like liver too with onions and bacon....yummmm!

I've heard this a lot, yet my birds consistently just use it as celebratory confetti, throwing it around with wild glee and not really consuming anything. My juveniles especially are delighted to use them as toys, and my breeding pairs insist on just lining their nests with it.
PAH!
Oh... and of course as litter - they just poop like crazy in it.
Maybe its aroma has a laxative effect on them or something :/
