Hi everone, hope your weekend is going well...

Question, I have ha my pair of Gouldians for about a month, they seem to have settled in nicely...in their seed feeder, I fill it up, then wind up trashing what seems to be most of the seed every morning for new, fresh, uneaten seed..I do this to prevent sickness, and because I worry the birds won't dig deeper so to speak to get at more seed, but I am going through alot of seed...any tips?

Since you refill it every morning just put a thin layer of seed...what they normally consume. You can add a second cup the same way just in case you are not able to feed the next morning.
I always recyle my seed. What is emptied from the gouldians is put out for the zebras in the flights..... They pick out all the goodies that the gouldians overlooked (the zebs get there own fresh also to make sure they have a complete diet).
After that it gets recycled again out doors to the wild birds... and yes...there is still desirable tidbits. Maybe offer to the yardbirds
This way I don't feel wasteful...someone is eating it

I don't think you have to throw all the seed away and fill up again ,true they don't dig down deep for the seed I just blow the hulls off with a soda straw try it works well, take outside unless the wife don't mind cleaning it up

I agree - blow off the hulls daily and every other day I add a fresh layer of seeds and then mix it up so it's not just fresh seed on top.
Every week I let the trough get down a bit so I can dump the tiny dusts and pieces in the bottom that won't get eaten and can eventually lend to problems; but there is no need to trash the seed every morning, especially if there is a lot of uneaten pieces.

I also had a lot of waste, until I bought the hopper. Now there's no more waste.

We throw the seed outside as well after the zebras are done with it. Not surprisingly the "gourmet" seed is always the first to be depleted. Dang birds are developing expensive taste.
