When I got my painted finches I read they loved oranges. I began putting them into the aviary and sure enough...... they ate them.
I had tried oranges many times and no one would touch them.
Now that the painted finches are eating them many others have started eating oranges. The gouldians are beginning to eat them and the strawberry finches also.
I think this goes to show that other birds really can teach each other in a mixed aviary.

I've also started giving oranges ever since I saw the posts on this site. The only ones so far who touch them though are the zebra juveniles. But then again, they should have been named ''Mikey'' because they'll eat anything.

Just keep offering them and may the others will follow and start eating them.

I too believe birds learn from one another. Some take a long time before approaching new foods.
I often wonder if they wait for the first to eat them, then they think, well they didn't die...it must be safe
I accidently put a broccoli flower head in with the eggfood. The birds rushed down to get the egg and then flipped out, scared to death to see the broccoli, even though they eat broccoli....just in another dish. Silly Birds.

Just hope the oranges and broccoli dont learn to eat the finches. That would be bad.

Donna, that's great! Since I've moved my Societies in with the Gouldians, my RH male who never bathed before is now taking baths everyday
It's funny because they say Canaries love to bath and so far mine hasn't bathed once. I put a bath in everyday. When I move him to the new flight with the finches it will be interesting to see if he'll take the plunge then
